This holster belonged to William Newton Sage of New York, born 26 February, 1828. He was appointed from new York, First Lieutenant, 137th New York Volunteer Infantry, 3 September, 1862; Captain, 4 December, 1863. He was honorably mustered out 9 June, 1865. He served as Second Lieutenant, 39th United States Colored Infantry, 21 August, 1865; First Lieutenant, 9 November, 1865; Honorably Mustered out 4 December, 1865. Second Lieutenant and First Lieutenant, 11th United States Infantry, 23 February, 1866. Transferred to the 29th United States Infantry, 21 September, 1866. Transferred to the 11th United States Infantry, 25 April, 1869. Commander of Fort Bennett. Captain, 7 June, 1879. Retired 19 September, 1890.

Major Sage died on 16 March, 1906 and was buried in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery. This holster came from the family's auction which featured many other items belonging to Major Sage. Documentation from that auction will accompany this item. 

The holster is in great condition, leather and stitching are strong. Some scuffing, mostly following the outline of where the pistol rested inside. Unmarked, 11 1/4" long and 4" at widest point.
